This page gives access to photo albums, which contain pictures
taken from my Marina Towers 52nd floor balcony. My apartment points due
South, but I have a large semi-circular balcony. This provides me with a very
large range of views, as shown on the map below. Also, it is a REAL balcony
-- not one of those dinky, puny, iron things, which are stuck on the sides of
buildings being converted to residential use.
In the first
folder, you will see pictures of the reconstruction of the Marina City plaza
deck. The part of the plaza in these pictures is in front of the Smith &
Wollensky restaurant (where the beer garden would be located). The
entire Marina City plaza deck is being torn up and rebuilt due to major
leakage issues. But, the part in front of Smith & Wollensky is the only
major part of the project visible from my balcony.
You will not see me in any picture available from this page. I am
behind the camera. As far as I know, I was not holding the camera backwards
when I shot any of the photos!!!! I "shutter" to think of that
For the benefit of people with 56K modem connections, I try to limit the
number of photos to about 30 (or so) per album. This should facilitate
quicker page load times.

As you can see on the map, the grey circles are the two Marina
Towers (West Tower - left, and East Tower -right). I'm in the West Tower.
The black lines show the limits of my field of view from the balcony. I can
see anything below (South of) the lines. To put it as compass bearings, I can
see from about 80 to 270 degrees.
An interesting factoid: my worst viewing angles are due South and
Southwest. This is because of the unfortunate presence of Burnett and
Donnelley (aka the Leo Burnett Bldg, which is South, and the R.R. Donnelley
Bldg, which is Southwest).
Otherwise, I can see Navy Pier (slightly North of East), Lake Michigan
(generally to the East, in between the taller buildings), the Field Museum of
Natural History and part of Soldier Field (to the Southeast), and the West
Side of the city (to the West). My West view possibly includes the United
Center, although I haven't been able to actually see it. And, as can be seen
on the map, I get an excellent view of much of the main branch of the Chicago
River.
Here are some interesting Marina City links,
